The Citroën GSA was the development of the GS. A hatchback version with a tailgate, revised dashboard, and the 1,299cc engine that gave the flat-four adequate performance for the early 1980s. It also added the most extraordinary speedometer ever fitted to a family car: a drum rotating on a horizontal axis.
The Car
The GSA launched in 1979 with a hatchback body that improved the GS’s practicality substantially. The rotating drum speedometer, reading through a rectangular aperture, was a characteristically Citroën solution to a conventional problem. The GSA Club, Special, and Pallas trim levels covered the range. The GSA X3 estate provided further practicality. The same hydropneumatic suspension as the GS with improvements to the self-centring rear axle geometry.
Buying
The GSA is slightly more practical than the GS and somewhat more numerous in the UK. The same hydraulic maintenance priorities apply. The drum speedometer should be checked for correct operation as replacement is not straightforward.
