The G02 X4, launched in 2018 on the CLAR platform, was a significant improvement over the previous generation F26. It became lighter, sharper, and more sophisticated, with the M40i’s B58 straight-six at 354bhp making it genuinely quick despite its SUV proportions.
The Car
The G02 uses B48 four-cylinders and B58 straight-six across 20i through 30i petrol and 20d through 30d diesel variants, with the M40i at 354bhp as the performance peak below the X4M. xDrive is standard on all variants. A 2021 LCI facelift updated the styling and infotainment. Active rear-wheel steering is available on the M40i.
Buying
The M40i is the outstanding G02 specification. The 30d is the diesel recommendation. The BMW G02 X4 shares all its running gear with the G01 X3. The choice between them is purely about roofline preference and rear headroom tolerance.
